Schiller Institute Vice Chairwoman Amelia Boynton Robinson
issued the following statement on the passing of her friend
Mrs. Coretta Scott King, on Jan. 31, 2006.

On Tuesday morning, Jan. 31st, 2006, Coretta Scott King quietly laid the draperies of her beautiful past behind her, as she was gently borne to a place of rest by God’s heavenly angels.

I became acquainted a few months after the family (with then one child, whose name is Yolanda), moved to Montgomery, Alabama, where Dr. King pastored the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. After the death of Dr. King, Coretta was determined to keep his legacy alive. I was among the first to be asked to consider becoming a member of the board of the newly formed King Center on Auburn Ave. in Atlanta, Georgia. Serving for ten years, I gleaned from Coretta King, more patience, determination and courage in fighting discrimination among the white citizens, and deep-seated fear among people of my race. Coretta was a very strong woman, having to raise four children, while she loaned her husband to the world, withstanding non-believers who hated the troubling of the political racial waters. She stood firm, comforting others.

There were many dark days that brought pains, and nights when she could not sleep, but through it all she never became discouraged, or gave up hope, as she took the bitters with the sweets: The victory of winning the right for the citizens of the United States of America to vote and the Civil Rights Act were sweet rewards.

Having borne the cross, giving up her husband to the world, rearing four children, consoling thousands of people who called on her to help solve their political problems, working day and night to make the King Center a reality, God knew that Coretta Scott King had fulfilled the task she was given. She was tired of the troubles of the world. He said to her, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." He then sent two of His heavenly angels, to bear her spirit to that beautiful resting place, where there is no more sickness, sorrows, pains, nor death. I am sure she was met by her husband, Martin Luther King, and joined the heavenly chorus, where she blended her beautiful voice with the angelic chorus.
